FAQs

This section is based on those questions that we are frequently asked by non-Guernsey candidates interested in relocating here. If you have other questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

1. What types of jobs are there in Guernsey?

Whilst the finance industry is the main source of employment in Guernsey, there are other key areas. In particular there are large legal and professional sectors. Within finance the main sectors are fund management, fund administration, private and corporate trust, banking / private banking and insurance.

2. What would I be paid?

Salaries are entirely dependent upon your role and your qualifications and experience. For more information, please contact us and we will be pleased to advise.

3. How much tax would I pay ?

In Guernsey there is a flat rate of Income tax, which is currently 20%, plus an employee social security contribution of 6.5%. For 2010 the single person's income tax allowance is £9,050, whilst for a couple the allowance is £18,100. There are also allowances for mortgage interest on a principal residence in Guernsey.

There are no capital gains taxes, inheritance taxes, sales taxes or VAT, so generally the burden of taxation is low in Guernsey.

4. How does the cost of living compare ?

The cost of living in Guernsey is generally comparable with the UK, and often less. There is no VAT, and duties on drinks and petrol are significantly lower than in the UK. Food prices are comparable to the UK, and Guernsey has both local and UK national supermarkets.

A pint of beer costs about £2.50, whilst a meal out for two, with a bottle of wine will be about £40. A bus fare anywhere on the island costs £1.00, and a return flight to London can be purchased for about £100. Accommodation prices vary, and we suggest that you speak to local estate agents for further information. For more detailed information on the cost of living please consult the Atlas Guernsey Guide.

5. Would I receive a relocation package?

Many of our clients will provide a relocation package to people moving to Guernsey from outside the island. These packages vary from firm to firm, and are generally tailored to suit the individual's situation.

6. How long will relocation take?

The processing of work permit and housing licence applications can take up to 12 weeks. If an employer has already obtained "Permission in Principle" for a Housing licence the process will be faster.

Generally, relocation is a fairly trouble free process when moving to Guernsey. However, we recognise that it is still a demanding business, and we will assist you every step of the way, including collecting you from the airport, helping you find accommodation, and showing you around the Island.

7. Can I bring my partner ?

There are no restrictions on your partner entering the Island with you provided that he/she is permitted to work within the EU. If your partner wants to work in Guernsey they will need a "Right to Work" ("RTW") document. If you have been (or are being) granted an "Essential Licence" this will also cover your partner for RTW purposes, but Short Term Licences are single-status only and do not permit you to house a partner (or any other dependants). This is a complex area, so please contact us and we will be pleased to talk through the options with you.

8. My partner does not work in Finance - will he / she find a job?

There are all sorts of industries based in Guernsey, and we are happy to assist wherever we can. Whilst finance is the dominant industry there are always other avenues for people to pursue, and we have helped partners ranging from dairy farmers to teachers to find employment !

9. What is the schooling like?

The education system in Guernsey mirrors that of the UK, and the National Curriculum is followed. The States Education Council provides free education to children from primary school age and above, and there is also the option of a private schooling system, similar to the UK public school system.

10. For how long can I stay in Guernsey ?

Generally, if you are on an Essential Housing licence, you will be allowed to stay for at least three years, and most licences are issued for five years, They may sometimes be extended for a further two years. For senior positions (Director / Partner level) there are 15 year licences available. On completion of the 15 years residence the licence holder (and family) gain Local market status in their own right.
